Pickleball Strategy: 10 Principles for Singles and Doubles

Pickleball strategy comes down to ten habits, learned in the order a point is played: serve deep, return deep, control the third shot, move forward without stopping, and win the kitchen line. Each habit has a rule or a USA Pickleball coaching page behind it. Start with habits 1, 2 and 8.
The rules behind these habits are on the rules page. Strategy is advice, so each habit below is marked Rule (the rulebook makes it so) or Advice (a coaching page or our own reasoning), and the source is named. Each habit links to the page that goes deeper.

Serve and return
1. Serve deep, and make it legal first. Advice: USA Pickleball's singles tips say a deep serve pushes the returner behind the baseline. Rule: a serve that lands in the kitchen, or outside the correct service court, is a fault (7.E.1, 7.E.2). So aim for the back of the box, not past it. The steps are in how to serve.
2. Return deep, and let the serve bounce first. Rule: the receiver may not hit the serve out of the air (10.A.1). Advice: a deep return makes the serving team's third shot harder and gives you time to move forward. The two-bounce rule page covers the bounce.
Third shot and the move forward
3. Choose a third shot you can control. Rule: the serving team may not hit the return out of the air, so the third shot always comes after a bounce (10.A.2). Advice (ours): the two usual choices are a soft drop and a drive. This page doesn't rank them. The third shot drop page compares them.
4. Move forward fast, and stop only to get set. Advice: USA Pickleball's transition area page calls the strip from a foot or two behind the kitchen to a foot or two in front of the baseline a hard place to be caught. Opponents can drive the ball at your feet there, so the advice is to move through it quickly. Computed: the baseline is 15 feet from the kitchen line (22 - 7). See where to stand.
The kitchen line
5. Get to the kitchen line. Advice: USA Pickleball's coaching pages say most rallies and points are won there. Rule: every volley starts outside the kitchen (11.A), so the line, 7 feet from the net, is the closest place you can volley from. Stand behind it. Touching the kitchen or its line while you volley is a fault, and so is momentum that carries you in after the volley (11.A.1, 11.A.2). The kitchen page has every case.
6. Dink low and patiently. Advice: USA Pickleball's doubles tips call the crosscourt dink a reliable shot with a high margin for error. Rule fact: the net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center (3.B.6, 3.B.7). Which shot matters most? No rulebook ranks shots. Since most points are won at the line, the dink there gets the most attention, so start with what a dink is.
7. Reset when you are in trouble. Advice: USA Pickleball describes a reset as a soft, controlled shot that sends a hard ball into the opponent's kitchen. It slows the pace of the rally and buys you time to move forward. See the reset shot.
Every phase
8. Keep the ball in play and let them miss. Advice: USA Pickleball's singles tips say it's better to force your opponent into an error than to risk one yourself. Rule fact: in standard scoring a point comes only from serving and winning the rally (4.A). In singles, a rally you lose on your own serve is a side out (5.A.3), and you've scored nothing.
9. In doubles, move together and talk. Advice: USA Pickleball tells partners to get to the kitchen line together and to communicate. Rule: if you and your partner both hit the ball, it's a fault (10.D.2), so a call like "mine" has a reason. Read doubles strategy, and stacking for how partners choose their sides.
10. In singles, cover a half court alone. Computed: 20 by 22 feet is 440 square feet. Two partners who split that half each cover about 220. Advice: depth and recovery matter more when you're alone. One page goes into it: singles strategy.
Which should you learn first?
Start with the habits that stop you giving points away. This order is ours. It isn't a rule or a study.
| Stage | Habits | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1, 2, 8 (serve in, return deep, keep it in play) | Every point starts here, and a miss costs the rally |
| Second | 4, 5 (move up, kitchen line) | USA Pickleball says most points are decided at the line |
| Third | 3, 6, 7 (third shot, dink, reset) | The third shot comes before you reach the line. The dink and reset are the shots you need once you get there |
| Fourth | 9 or 10 (partner play or singles coverage) | Depends on the format you play |
One rally, in feet and rules
The serve lands deep in the box, not in the kitchen (7.E.2). The return bounces before the serving team hits it (10.A.2), so the third shot comes off a bounce too. From there each side has about 15 feet to cover from the baseline to the kitchen line. At the lines the two players are 14 feet apart (7 + 7). Both distances are computed from the 22 foot half court and the 7 foot kitchen (3.A.1, 3.A.4.c).
What the top lists leave out
No rule says where to stand after the serve and return, except that you stay on your own side of the net (5.B.4). Every positioning habit here is advice. "Serve hard" isn't on the list, because a legal serve only has to land in the box. And we searched the rulebook text for the word "strategy" and found no match, so this is coaching, not law.
Next game, pick one habit from the first row and count how many times you manage it. You can try them against the computer in the free game, in singles or doubles, at Low, Medium or Hard.
